Plan your Visit
We are dedicated to providing you with the highest standard of dental care, beginning with a thorough initial consultation. This first appointment is crucial in assessing your dental health and creating a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
What to expect On Your First Visit
Initial Consultation Overview
A consultation will be the first appointment that is made for you. This is typically following a referral from your general dentist, orthodontist or other dental specialist. A dentist would be ideally placed to recommend that you need specific treatment from a Periodontist or Prosthodontist. This initial consultation is a comprehensive examination carried out by our specialist dentist and normally takes approximately 45 minutes.
Arrival and Paperwork
On arrival at our practice, you will be asked to fill out some paperwork including your medical and dental history (to save your time we recommend to fill it in advance). This will be reviewed with the dentist to make sure that appropriate treatment is delivered successfully. If you have been referred to us by your dentist, we will have a referral letter on file and our dentist will review this before your visit.
Comprehensive Dental Evaluation
During your initial consultation, you will be evaluated for gum disease, bone and soft tissue assessment and oral cancer screening of the face, neck, lips, tongue or throat. Teeth are then examined for tooth decay and the condition of existing restorations you may have. X-rays may also be taken to visualise the tooth root and bone health of your jaws.
Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
On completion of this examination, the findings will be explained in detail to you. The dentist will provide you with an initial diagnosis, recommend any further diagnostic tests required and discuss the next steps in treatment and expected costs. We will give you all the information you need to make an informed decision about your dental needs and a treatment plan can then be put in place as required.
Nervous Patients
Many patients delay or put off attending the dentist because they are nervous or afraid. The techniques, materials, and medications that we now use should make dental treatment a comfortable experience. However, there are still some patients whose fear of dental treatment remains insurmountable. For these patients, we can and want to help.
Conscious sedation techniques provide a means to undergo dental treatment comfortably and reduce the stresses and fears. Our practice offers all available options of conscious sedation utilized in dentistry, including:
- Oral sedation
- Inhalation (using nitrous oxide or ‘Laughing Gas’) sedation
- Intravenous (IV) sedation
What is Sedation?
Sedation dentistry is often mistakenly thought to induce sleep. In fact, most sedatives allow the patient to stay awake during the procedure. Sleepiness is a side effect of some medications, but nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation and IV sedation only work to calm anxiety throughout the dental visit. Sedation dentistry is popular because most sedatives can be taken by mouth, meaning no injections, no anxiety and no pain.
Effectiveness of Sedatives
- Patients who receive conscious sedation usually are able to speak and respond to verbal cues throughout the procedure.
- The smells and details of the procedure cannot be recalled afterwards.
- A brief period of amnesia may eliminate any memory of the procedure.
