Who needs an appointment with a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontics can treat a wide range of issues. Your general dentist might refer you to a prosthodontist if you have:

  • Missing teeth
  • Severely damaged teeth
  • Failing prostheses such as Crowns or Dentures
  • Inability to eat and function
  • Occlusion or bite issues
  • TMJ pain or dysfunction
  • Oral and/or facial pain
  • Cosmetic concerns

A crown, or cap, fully covers a tooth to restore shape, size, and strength, often used when fillings aren’t enough. Porcelain crowns are durable, natural-looking, and match existing teeth. They are indicated for broken, decayed, or root canal-treated teeth. Placement involves two visits: first for digital impressions and a temporary crown, second for fitting the permanent crown. Regular check-ups ensure its condition.

Veneers are custom-made porcelain pieces, bonded to the front of teeth to enhance aesthetics or correct damage, misshapenness, or stains. They reshape teeth, close gaps, and can be alternatives to crowns. The process involves two visits: initial teeth shaping and digital impressions, followed by cleaning and bonding the veneers with cement and a special light. Proper hygiene and regular check-ups are crucial for longevity.

Inlays and onlays, or partial crowns, are custom restorations for large cavities or covering a tooth’s cusp. Made from composite, gold, or porcelain, they preserve more tooth structure than crowns. The process involves two appointments: one for impressions and preparation with a temporary filling, and the second for cementing the custom piece. They repair broken teeth, enhance cosmetics, treat decay, or replace large fillings. Proper care prolongs their lifespan.

A dental bridge, typically porcelain fused to metal, replaces missing teeth with false teeth anchored by crowns on adjacent natural teeth. This fixed appliance restores facial shape, improves chewing and speaking, and enhances smiles. The process involves two visits: one to prepare the anchoring teeth and take impressions, and a second to fit and cement the bridge. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits ensure its longevity.

Dentures are removable appliances replacing missing teeth, improving smile, chewing, and speech. They come in two types: Complete Dentures (for all missing teeth) and Partial Dentures (for some missing teeth). Complete Dentures can be “conventional” (placed after gum healing) or “immediate” (placed right after tooth removal). The process includes several appointments for impressions, measurements, and adjustments, ensuring a precise fit. Proper care and regular dental visits are essential for their longevity.

Tooth whitening is a non-invasive treatment to enhance tooth enamel colour, usually done with a home whitening system requiring two visits. Custom trays are made and fitted, then used with a whitening solution twice daily for 30 minutes or overnight for a few weeks. Sensitivity may occur but diminishes after treatment. Post-whitening, care advice and regular dental visits are recommended. Whitening works best on natural enamel, and restorations may need replacing to match the new colour. Touch-ups are periodically needed.

What’s the first step with a Prosthodontist?

Our Prosthodontists are dedicated to rehabilitating not only the appearance of teeth but also ensuring the proper function of the jaw and overall oral health. Through meticulous planning and personalised treatment strategies, they strive to achieve the highest standards of patient care and satisfaction. If you have been referred to us by your dentist, we will have a referral letter on file and our dentist will review this before your visit.

During your initial consultation, teeth are examined for tooth decay and the condition of existing restorations you may have. X-rays may also be taken to visualise the tooth root and bone health of your jaws.

The clinic is very professional. I had an appointment with Dr Paul and then with Lucia. Both were excellent, treatment and advice was spot on. Reception staff were accommodating and friendly and organised a suitable appointment time. I felt in good hands from start to finish.

Traveling around long term so we wanted to keep up our dental hygiene on the road. Since we have gum issues, we were specifically looking for someone with a good periodontal practice for our cleaning but wouldn’t require us to go through a whole new patient appointment since we have doctors at home but just wanted to keep up our cleaning regimen while traveling. They were happy to book appointments for us with just the hygienist, Maria, who we thought did a thorough job. Cleaning is about the same cost as at home (€90 each). We were pleased and if we ever move to Ireland or need another cleaning while we are here, we would definitely come back.
